Lake Olive Drainwell Replacement Project

The drainwell that controls the level for Lake Olive has failed. The project entails the abandonment of the existing failed drainwell and the installation of a new drainwell. The project will re-establish the lake level to minimize the potential for flooding in this area.

Flooding in this area occurred during Hurricane Ian. An inspection of the drainwell servicing the lake revealed that the integrity of the casing had been impacted and ultimately resulted in a blockage of the drainwell that formerly controlled the lake level.

The Public Works Department will hire a specialty contractor to construct a new drainwell structure to replace the existing one.  Immediate replacement of the structure is necessary because the drainwell has reached the end of its life span.

We anticipate the project will take approximately three months to complete.

The city's Public Works Department is closely monitoring the global supply chain issue, labor shortages, and increases in the price of materials.

The competitive bid contractor and the city will strive to complete a capital improvement project on time and within budget. However, due to circumstances outside the control of both entities, there may be delays in necessary materials, potential for projects to be completed over budget, and potential delays.

We will continue to work with the community and our stakeholders to address the above mentioned issues and return normalcy to a community.

Project hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., between Monday and Friday. Work on Saturday may become necessary should the contractor experience unforeseen circumstances or adverse weather.

The construction entrance will be along Summerlin Avenue. Residents and commuters in this area may be affected by temporary lane closures during equipment mobilization and demobilization. The sidewalks to the north and south of the project may also be closed during these activities.

Once underway, the contractor will place turbidity barriers at the shoreline near the project site to protect the integrity of Lake Olive. There is a high potential for noise during the project. Drilling and well constructing equipment will be necessary to construct the new drainwell structure.

Should there be adverse weather, there is a contingency to pump water from Lake Olive to another water body to minimize opportunities for flooding.

Currently, no road closures or detours are necessary for the community.
