The replacement of Lift Station 55 will assist in maintaining efficiency for the city's sanitary sewer system.

The city is committed to efficient and reliable utilities for our residents and businesses. To maintain that commitment, Public Works is proactively and systematically taking steps to improve the sanitary sewer services it provides. In September 2023, Public Works will begin the complete replacement of Lift Station 55. The project location is 5290 International Drive.

In 1974, Lift Station 55 was constructed, primarily serving as the drainage point for wastewater generated by commercial properties within the International Drive district. To facilitate the transfer of wastewater, this lift station employs a, approximately 6,700-linear foot long, 16-inch diameter, cast iron force main. There are no other lift stations connected to this force main to serve the needs of this specific area.

The existing lift station has aged significantly, leading to heightened maintenance demands and a reduction in its overall reliability. The station has surpassed its useful life, necessitating a comprehensive overhaul. We need to enhance the station's capacity to accommodate future wastewater flow. Pump station components and equipment will be modernized in accordance with the latest standards and code requirements, thereby ensuring its long-term reliability and functionality.

During the project, the contractor, Sawcross, Inc., will build a facility to house new pumps and other equipment. The contractor will use this opportunity to also install a new odor control system to remove unpleasant smells.

We anticipate this project will take 16 months to complete. Adverse weather and unforeseen circumstances can create delays and increase the project's duration.

There will be no interruption in sanitary sewer services while the project is in progress. At this time, no road closures are necessary until the final tie-in to the existing sewer system when the new station is ready to be put in service.  When that happens, there will be one lane closure.

Work hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. We expect the direct impact on nearby businesses to be minimal. Nearby businesses may experience a potential increase in noise during project hours. Please know adverse weather and unforeseen circumstances can increase the project's duration. Solid waste, recycling, mail and other services will continue as scheduled. Should an emergency occur, first responders and emergency vehicles will have priority access.
