Bike Friendly Business Certification

The City of Orlando Transportation Planning Division is collaborating with the Office of Sustainability and Resilience to recognize employers for their efforts to encourage a welcoming atmosphere for bicycling employees, customers, and the community.

This custom Bicycle Friendly Business Program will help to build a strong bike culture that welcomes and celebrates bicycling by encouraging businesses to become certified as League of American Bicyclists’ Bicycle Friendly Businesses. The program is open to all businesses within the City of Orlando.

To be certified, organizations must apply to The League and demonstrate how they support the bicycling community.

The deadline to apply is June 5, 2024 at 11:59 p.m.

Each Bicycle Friendly America program is built around five categories — known as the Five E’s — that are consistent in making great places for bicycling. These categories are:

  • Engineering
  • Education
  • Encouragement
  • Evaluation and planning
  • Equity and accessibility

Examples of bicycle friendliness include hosting events that cater to or support bicyclists, encouraging customers and/or employees to arrive by bike, and providing facilities that make bicycling to their respective establishments easier, like bike parking and changing facilities.

The League evaluates these qualities and more, then ranks the level of bicycle friendliness by Bronze, the lowest designation, Silver, Gold, or Platinum, the very highest designation, or with no award at all. Every applicant also receives feedback on how to be more bike friendly.

The League recognizes deserving businesses at the Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum level, but all applicants receive valuable feedback and assistance in becoming more bicycle friendly. When your business joins the more than 400 BFBs across the nation, you’ll get:

  • Recognition in a national press release
  • Decals for your workplace
  • A profile on the League website and in the League’s annual yearbook distributed to 10,000 homes across the nation

Silver and higher awards also receive a bicycle print award.

The city will celebrate our businesses' achievement and commitment to bicycling by elevating and recognizing these businesses in a variety of ways, including promotion on the city’s social media accounts, at council meetings, and on bicycle maps and other materials.

Businesses that promote bicycling are recognized for being green and socially responsible. They are conscious of their carbon footprint, aware of their impact on the environment, and are willing to think and act creatively in order to improve the quality of life for employees, their families and the greater community. A Bicycle Friendly Business attracts and retains employees, because people want to be part of a positive environment.

A bicycle friendly business also means more customers that spend more time and money shopping or dining, resulting in higher profits and more loyal patrons. Encouraging bicycling showcases your commitment to sustainability, healthy living and accessibility for all. And biking doesn’t just enhance your bottom line — it makes your business a fun, engaging and exciting place to work or shop.
