City of Orlando Youth Will Spend Spring Break Volunteering in Puerto Rico

WHAT: 

Thirty-two students from City of Orlando youth programs are traveling to Puerto Rico during their spring break to perform various service projects assisting with the island’s Hurricane Maria recovery efforts, and are visiting colleges. Prior to their departure on Monday, March 19, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill are visiting the students to wish them well. Additionally, District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz and District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill will join the students on the service trip.

During the service trip, middle and high school students will:

  • Deliver backpacks filled with school supplies and books to schools
  • Organize field day events with children in hard-hit areas
  • Deliver supplies and donations to an orphanage
  • Help repaint a school

For Suanitsy Gonzalez, a 17-year-old Colonial High School student who is going on the trip, this service project is particularly personal. “I have family members on the island and it’s really meaningful that I’ll have the opportunity to be able to interact and connect with students my age and help the island in these recovery efforts,” Gonzalez stated.

The trip is part of the city’s continued commitment to offering educational and life-skill opportunities for young residents year-round, and provides students with a way to give back while expanding their cultural horizons.
