City of Orlando celebrates park dedicated to African-American Army Veteran during Black History Month
WHAT:
On Wednesday, February 28, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 6 City Commissioner Samuel B. Ings and District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill will join residents to officially open the renovated Gilbert McQueen Park with a ribbon cutting ceremony.
Other renovations at the park include new playground equipment, updated basketball courts, new paving, new signage and new benches. This park also now has the first parent-child swing city, promoting integrated play for adults and children under five, allowing them to swing together, face-to-face.
In addition to unveiling new amenities at the park, the event will also serve as a celebration of the life and sacrifice of Private Gilbert Demopolis McQueen during Black History Month. The park is named in honor of the first African-American from Orlando killed in the Korean War. McQueen was a member of the Army’s 24thInfantry Regiment, 25th Infantry Division and received multiple awards for his service. A graduate of Jones High School, he was a certified swimming instructor for the Red Cross and an Eagle Scout who became a Scoutmaster.
