Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Celebrates National Walk to a Park Day with a 10-Minute Walk to Lake Eola Park
Event Also Launches City’s Parks Master Plan Visioning Process
WHAT:
In recognition of National Walk to a Park Day, a day devoted to celebrating existing parks and advocating for future parks, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is joining children from Lake Eola Charter School for a 10-minute walk to Lake Eola Park.
The event symbolizes the city’s commitment to ensure access to parks for everyone. One way to increase this access is ensuring parks are within a 10-minute walk to all homes in the City of Orlando. To advance the 10-minute walk vision, the city will launch a citywide Parks Master Plan visioning process. The project will analyze existing parks and green spaces in the city and help create a road map to further ensure and provide access to current and new parks. The update of the Parks Master Plan will also include a walk time analysis for each park to determine real-world accessibility of current parks in relation to the 10-minute walk vision.
The vision process to continue building upon the city’s existing 120 parks is part of a U.S. Conference of Mayors 10-Minute Walk grant of $40,000 from the National Recreation and Park Association. The approximate year-long process will include multiple opportunities for community feedback and input, including online and in-person surveys and community meetings held throughout the city.
BACKGROUND:
In the past five years, the city has opened or renovated 21 parks with two renovations currently in development and two additional parks, McCoy Park and Heroes Community Park, opening in Lake Nona in early 2019.
