Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill and Orlando City Commissioners Join Residents for Tinker Field History Plaza Ribbon Cutting Ceremony
WHAT:
On Wednesday, May 2, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill and Orlando City Commissioners will join the community for the official Tinker Field History Plaza ribbon cutting ceremony to recognize 100 years of Orlando baseball and Civil Rights history. A key part of the city’s plan for strategic growth is recognizing, preserving and celebrating the past and honoring history, which makes this event particularly impactful during Historic Preservation Month in May.
The Plaza incorporates historical elements including:
- Baseball timeline and plaque
- Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. and baseball Hall of Famer Clark Griffith monuments
- Refurbished original stadium seats and gateway entrance
- Vintage-style lighting
- State of Florida Historical Marker
- Replica covered pavilion
BACKGROUND:
Under the leadership of Mayor Dyer and District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill, the Tinker Field History Plaza was developed with a vision to create a space for people to gather, learn, reflect and honor the many baseball legends who played in Orlando as well as the local and national heroes of the Civil Rights Movement who integrated professional sports the city.
In 2015, the Orlando City Council designated Tinker Field as an Orlando historic landmark, providing residents and visitors an opportunity to learn about its history and events.
