Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Kicks Off City of Orlando’s Spring Into Sustainability Campaign with Earth Hour 2018

City Encourages Residents and Businesses to Join Tens of Millions in Turning Off Lights for One Hour on March 24

WHAT:

This year, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer is starting Earth Month festivities early. This Saturday, the City of Orlando will join more than 180 countries and 7,000 cities for Earth Hour, to turn off the lights to the Lake Eola Fountain, several SEE ART ORLANDO sculptures and the City Hall building and dome during the hours of 8:30-9:30 p.m. to raise awareness about energy conversation and climate action.

Earth Hour was started in 2007 by the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), and is now celebrated as a global moment of solidarity for the planet. The city is encouraging local residents and businesses to join the movement during this hour, turning of all non-essential lights in homes and places of business.

Also during Earth Hour, residents are welcome to join the second annual “Yoga in the Dark” class at the northeast lawn of Lake Eola, providing an opportunity to practice yoga outside under the stars.

The city’s participation in Earth Hour is part of Mayor Dyer’s Green Works Orlando initiative that goes Beyond the Hour to protect our natural resources, encourage environmentally-friendly lifestyles and business practices and engage everyone who lives, works and visits Central Florida in the effort to “go green.”

Throughout Earth Month in April, there are many opportunities for local residents, families and businesses to continue “Springing into Sustainability,” by participating in activities like Earth Hour to help create a greener future for Orlando. The city will also be promoting several free programs available to residents like work days, tree planting and clean-up events.
