Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer to Join Teachers, Campers for Summer Learning Day Work-Along
WHAT:
On July 12, 2018, Summer Learning Day, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will assist 30 certified teachers with a lesson for students at the City of Orlando’s Dover Shores Neighborhood Center to help summer campers avoid the “summer slide” of losing skills learned in the classroom the previous school year. Summer Learning Day is a national advocacy day aimed at elevating the importance of keeping kids learning, safe and healthy every summer, ensuring they return to school in the fall ready to succeed.
WHY:
- Summer learning loss during elementary school accounts for two-thirds of the achievement gap in reading between low-income children and their middle-income peers by ninth grade.
- Students who fall behind over the summer are less likely to graduate from high school or go on to college, and most students lose two months of mathematical skills every summer.
- However, elementary school students with high levels of attendance (at least five weeks) in voluntary summer learning programs experience higher levels of achievement in math and reading.
The City of Orlando Recreation Division offers a wide array of programs for youth year-round, including after school and summer camps that provide academic tutoring and educational lessons focusing on the core areas of reading, math and science as well as recreational activities.
