City of Orlando Launches Food Waste Collection Program at All Three Orlando Farmers Markets
Lake Eola Farmers Market collects over 400 lbs in its first weekend.
WHAT:
Have you ever thought about how much of your trash is food waste? It is estimated that approximately 24 pounds of food waste goes into Central Florida landfills every second and the City of Orlando wants to put all that waste to work.
Starting this month, residents can give new purpose to their kitchen scraps and other compostable waste by bringing their leftovers to any of the three City of Orlando Farmers Markets.
LeAnn Siefferman, the city’s Sustainability Project Coordinator will be available to provide a demonstration showing how residents can participate in the program and to explain how the city’s growing food waste program is helping convert organic waste into clean energy and transforming Orlando’s organic waste problem into a sustainable local resource.
