2019 Commemoration Events
Local Martin Luther King, Jr. Events Honor the Life and Legacy of Late Civil Rights Leader
WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Mayor’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission are proud to announce a variety of events to commemorate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. throughout the month of January.
The Commission is a volunteer organization including business and community representatives appointed by Mayor Dyer to raise funds and coordinate events that promote the celebration of Dr. King’s legacy of equality, justice, freedom, peace and harmony for all races and cultures in Greater Orlando. Below is a list of this year’s events.
Asterisks (***) denote the events that Mayor Dyer will play a role in this year, and interview and visual opportunities will be available.

Candlelight Vigil and March***
6:00 p.m.
Orange County Regional History Center Plaza, 65 East Central Boulevard
Presented by the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission. Following the vigil participants will march to First United Methodist Church of Orlando. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to stock community pantries. This event is free.
Interfaith Multicultural Celebration***
6:30 p.m.
First United Methodist Church of Orlando, 142 East Jackson Street
Presented by the Interfaith Council of Central Florida. The celebration’s theme will be “Discord into Symphony” and the event speaker will be U.S. Representative Val Demings. This event is free.

Beyond the Dream: A Gospel Concert Celebration
7:00 p.m.
St. Mark AME Church, 1968 Bruton Boulevard
Presented by the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission celebrating 33 years of the King Holiday in songs and performances. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to stock community pantries. This event is free.

15th Annual MLK Leadership Forum
6:30 p.m.
Florida A&M University College of Law, 201 Beggs Avenue
Presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. The event theme is “Are We Fulfilling the American Dream?” and will include a panel discussion focusing on issues of significance to the community and concepts addressed by Dr. King. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to stock community pantries. This event is free.

33rd Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Luncheon***
11:30 a.m.
First Baptist Church of Orlando – Faith Hall, 3000 South John Young Parkway
This celebration and lunch is presented by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and will feature author, podcaster and TV host Toure’ Neblett as the event speaker. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to stock community pantries. There is a cost for this event.

35th Annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Parade***
10:00 a.m. (parade starts)
Orange Avenue Downtown Orlando
Presented by the Southwest Orlando Jaycees, the theme for this year’s parade is “King’s Vision: Humanity tied in a Single Garment of Destiny.” This is a community parade to honor the legacy and life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and bring the message of unity to all people. This event is free.
Orlando Magic Game
7:00 p.m.
Orlando Magic vs. Milwaukee Bucks, Amway Stadium, 400 West Church Street, #200
Youth Humanitarian award winners will be recognized during half time at the Orlando Magic game. The award winners are Orange County middle and high students selected by school officials for exemplifying the ideals embraced by Dr. King, Jr. There is a cost for this event.

28th Annual Arthur “Pappy” Kennedy Prayer Breakfast***

First Baptist Church of Orlando – Faith Hall, 3000 South John Young Parkway
Presented by the YMCA of Central Florida, the Southwest Orlando Jaycees and the Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission. The annual breakfast will feature Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings as the event speaker. There is a cost for this event.
City of Orlando Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Commission Great Day of Service
8:30 a.m.
Emmanuel Haitian United Methodist Church, 701 Concord Street
Presented by the City of Orlando Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission, in partnership with the Mayor’s Office, the Downtown Development Board, the Orlando Fire Department, the Orlando Police Department and the Orlando Magic, volunteers will work on projects to benefit City of Orlando residents. Attendees are asked to bring non-perishable food items to stock community pantries. This event is free.
Seedlings for Civil Rights
9:00 a.m.
City of Orlando Northwest Neighborhood Center, 3955 WD Judge Drive
Presented by the City of Orlando Green-Up Orlando, Keep Orlando Beautiful and Green Works programs. Volunteers will help “Green Up” the Northwest Neighborhood Center by planting trees and completing other beautification projects. This event is free.
