The City of Orlando Wages War Against Invasive Plant

Last updated on June 26, 2019

WHAT:
This Friday the Orlando Parks Division is welcoming some winged wonders to their work force.

Lilioceris Cheni, a beetle used to control invasive plants, is going to help combat the invasive and fast growing air potato plant that has taken up residence in the City of Orlando.

The beetles will be released Friday, June 28, 2019, at 9 a.m. to help with the removal of vines that have overtaken a three acre patch of property owned by the city.

District 2 City Commissioner Tony Ortiz and City of Orlando Natural Resources Manager Jody Buyas will be on site for the beetle release and available to discuss why the City of Orlando is turning to this biological control option to deal with this twining vine that can grow up to 65-feet long and is strong enough to climb over and smother native vegetation.
