The City of Orlando Begins Design Phase for the Lake Highland Drive & Alden Road Realignment and Utility Project
WHAT:
On Tuesday, August 25 at 6:00 p.m., city staff will be sharing design plans for the Lake Highland Drive and Alden Road Realignment and Utility Project and engaging the community in a virtual discussion to gather feedback.
The project is a result of the 2017 Virginia & Lake Highland Transportation and Land Use Study and 2017 Virginia Drive Special Plan, which identified opportunities to improve the transportation infrastructure in these neighborhoods.
This project will improve the streetscape along Lake Highland Drive, adding amenities that include traffic calming, brick restoration and new crosswalks and increase connectivity in the area with a phased extension of Alden Road. Estimated completion for the transportation project is Spring 2023.
Additionally, as part of the project, in conjunction with OUC, the city will be replacing aging water and wastewater lines with new, upsized piping between Orange Avenue and Bumby Avenue, including along Lake Highland Drive from Thornton Avenue to Highland Avenue and along the future phased extension of Alden Road.
The utility project is estimated to start construction in the Spring of 2021, with completion estimated in Spring 2023.

BACKGROUND:
In November 2017, the City adopted the Virginia Drive Special Plan, following completion of the Virginia & Lake Highland Transportation and Land Use Study, to guide strategic growth in the Virginia Drive area, while ensuring the nature and character of the neighborhood and residential areas was preserved.
The Special Plan addresses complete streets principles for the following roadways: Virginia Drive, Brookhaven Drive, Alden Road, and Lake Highland Drive. The plan also establishes urban design standards for development of property, including height limits.
