City of Orlando Partners with Central Florida Urban League to Provide Job Training to Residents Impacted by COVID-19

February 19, 2021 (Orlando, Fla.) – The City of Orlando and the office of District 5 Commissioner Regina I. Hill are pleased to announce 54 residents have completed the BLUEPRINT 2.0 Expansion Program for COVID-19 Relief. The program is a partnership between the City and Central Florida Urban League and was funded by a $225,000 federal COVID-19 relief grant awarded by Orange County Government.

Through the special funding provided to the BLUEPRINT 2.0 Expansion Program, a short-term training program, the city was able to provide each of the 54 residents with career-counseling, certified job-skills training, stipends, and supportive services to residents who lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Commissioner Hill was instrumental in helping secure these funds and implement the program to help some the city’s most in need residents during these challenging times that the pandemic has created.  The speed in which this program came to be, and its success is noteworthy.  Its doors opened on November 9, 2020 and in less than two months, the program ended on December 30, 2020, it had exceeded its performance goal by 35%: serving 54 residents rather than the goal of 40.

"This is personal to me," Commissioner Hill said. "We need to be on the frontline and meet people where they are. Education is the greatest equalizer, and the best social program is a job.  Now these residents have job-skills in demand by employers, they will no longer be vulnerable to the fluctuations of the service industry."

Students who were part of the program have said they have already felt the impact of the training on their lives and futures, sharing that the knowledge gained through the program is something that can never be taken away.

For residents interested in job training and building their skills, the Central Florida Urban League offers many training options through its BLUEPRINT 2.0 – Expansion Program. Information is available by contacting Paula Stanberry, program manager, at 407.841.7654 or pstanberry@cful.org and at the League's offices located at 595 West Church Street in Downtown Orlando.
