Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill Join Infinite Zion Farms for Spring Harvest at the South Street Farm
City of Orlando seeks to expand access to affordable, healthy food options this fall
WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will join District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill and Infinite Zion Farms in a spring harvest of kale and greens and the planting of the datil pepper at the South Street Farm located in the Parramore community.
Created in 2016 through a partnership with the City of Orlando and Infinite Zion Farms and thanks to a USDA Community Support Agriculture (CSA) grant, the South Street Farm provides west Orlando residents with access to fresh, locally grown produce. In 2020, more than 2,000 pounds of produce was grown at the farm, which served more than 100 residents throughout the pandemic when access to critical needs like food has been more important than ever. Through the USDA Community Support Agriculture (CSA) grant, Infinite Zion Farms distributed more than 320 bags of seasonal produce that residents can arrange for pickup or delivery for the low cost of five dollars.
Due to the success of the South Street Farm, the City of Orlando is also working to convert three additional vacant city lots into a new urban farm and community garden near the Callahan Neighborhood Center. Through this process, the new farm could be up and running, providing increased access to healthy and affordable produce to the Parramore community by the fall of this year.
As part of the Green Works Community Action Plan, these community urban farms further the city’s sustainability goal to ensure equitable access to affordable, healthy food options within a half mile of every resident and increasing local food assets by 2040.
