Events throughout the city will help recognize and bring awareness to the date
WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer has proclaimed Friday, June 19 as “Juneteenth” in the City of Orlando and several community events are planned to recognize the oldest known public celebration of the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865.
The day celebrates freedom for Black Americans and recognizes the strives gained through determination, perseverance, education and greater opportunity and also acknowledges that the struggle for equality continues.
This Juneteenth reaffirms the city’s commitment to ensure rights and privileges are available to Black Americans and all residents equally and that Orlando remains an inclusive, welcoming city for all.
