September 27, 2022 – ORLANDO, FL – At a press conference today at 1:00 p.m., Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the City of Orlando issued the following information to keep the community informed and up to date on Hurricane Ian preparations:
EMERGENCY OPERATIONS:
The city continues to monitor the storms track and has plans to go to a Level 1 Full Activation as more information becomes available.
SOLID WASTE UPDATE:
Today, residential and commercial trash, yard waste and recycling pick up is operating as normal.
The City will suspend residential and commercial garbage, recycling and yard waste pick up starting tomorrow, Wednesday, September 28, 2022 through Friday, September 30.
Following Hurricane Ian, depending on weather and road conditions, the City will work to pick up missed garbage, yard and recycling collections starting on Saturday. October 1. Please note, this is subject to change depending on impacts. We will continue to provide updates throughout the storm on garbage, yard and recycling schedules.
The City is asking residents to help us prevent flooding by not placing tree trimmings or any type of loose waste or yard debris at their curb. During a severe weather event, these items can clog storm drains which may result in flooding of property and/or the street.
PARKING GARAGE FEES WAIVED:
The City will waive parking fees for the following parking garages beginning at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28, for any resident who would like to park a car in a covered garage.
- Central Boulevard Garage, 53 West Central Boulevard
- Jefferson Street Garage, 62 West Jefferson Street
- Library Garage, 112 East Central Boulevard
- Orange County Administration Garage, 300 Liberty Avenue
This is for passenger vehicles only and height restrictions must be adhered to. No oversized vehicles, campers, boats, trailers, watercraft, etc. will be permitted to enter.
All cars should be removed by 8 p.m. Friday, September 30, dependent on weather and road conditions.
CITY OPERATIONS:
The City of Orlando’s non-essential offices and services, including City Hall, will close at 12 p.m. on Wednesday, September 28 and go to remote work for the duration of that day. These facilities will remain closed Thursday, September 29 and Friday, September 30, 2022.
RECREATION AND COMMUNITY CENTER CLOSURES:
All City of Orlando Community Centers, Recreation Centers and Pools will close Wednesday, September 28, at 12 p.m. and will remain closed through Friday, September 30, 2022. On Wednesday, September 28 only, the City's After School Program will continue to operate for youths that are currently enrolled from 6:30 a.m. until 12 p.m. at those sites. This is to allow parents more time to make last minute hurricane preparations while schools are closed.
Additionally, all sporting and event activities and scheduled programs have been canceled at the City’s Recreation Centers, Community Centers, Parks and Recreation Facilities starting Wednesday, September 28, 2022 through Friday, September 30, 2022.
HELPING THE HOMELESS:
Persons experiencing homelessness in Central Florida are most vulnerable to the impact of a major hurricane. The Homeless Services Network is working with the homeless shelters in our area who will add service beyond their typical capacity to serve homeless individuals who are seeking refuge during Hurricane Ian.
The city’s Downtown Ambassadors and HOPE Team Outreach partners are out today on the streets providing weather information and directing people to shelters and will continue these efforts as long as it is safe to do so.
CITIZEN INFORMATION LINE:
The Citizen Info Line - 407-246-HELP (4357) - is NOT live. Once activated, in the event of impact from the storm, this is where residents can call to report damage, downed trees, traffic lights that are out and get information from the city on response efforts.
