January 28, 2022-ORLANDO, FL —The City of Orlando invites nominations for individuals to be honored posthumously as Luminaries at Parramore’s new Luminary Green Park at Creative Village.
The new2.3-acrepark,which is currently under construction, will be a unique and special gathering space for residents, workers and students that will compliment Parramore and serve as a signature park in downtown for generations to come. Completion of the park is expected by this spring and the city plans to host a celebration to unveil and honor the Luminaries in the summer of 2022.
“When we began planning for the new public park at Creative Village, we wanted to ensure it paid tribute to and shined a light on the Holden-Parramore community’s rich history,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “The park provides a unique opportunity to honor late community Luminaries, those whose lives preceded ours and are exemplified by their service to our community.”
Each Luminary will be honored posthumously at the park with a permanent eight-feet-tall, ground-mounted light fixture made of glass and laser-cut steel with multi-colored lights shining from within to luminate their legacy.
NOMINATION PROCESS:
Luminaries will be selected based the outstanding contributions made during their lifetime to the Parramore-Holden Community in one or more of the following categories:
- Public safety and crime reduction
- Quality housing
- Entrepreneurship, business and job opportunities
- Care and education for children and families
- Community health or medical leadership
- Faith-based leadership
- Sports
- Civil rights
The nomination period will remain open until March 4, 2022. Residents who would like more information or to submit a nomination can visit Orlando.gov/Luminary.
SELECTION PROCESS:
Following the nomination period, the Luminary Selection Panel will meet in March to review the nominations and select the inaugural class of Luminaries (approximately 16).The city hopes to add more Luminaries over time for a total of up to 26 Luminaries honored in the park.
The Luminary Selection Panel, invited by Mayor Dyer, is comprised of a diverse group of Holden-Parramore community leaders, stakeholders and advocates to review the nominations and assist in the selection process. The Luminary Selection Panel includes the following nine representatives:
- Chair: Walter Hawkins, Director of Urban Development, City of Orlando
- Representative Geraldine Thompson, Florida House of Representatives
- Byron Brooks, County Administrator, Orange County Government
- Dr. Clara Walters, Jones High School Principal 1981-1990
- Reverend Dr. Robert M. Spooney, Pastor, Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Institutional Church
- Ann Brown, resident and President of the Callahan Neighborhood Association
- Pamela Woodley, former resident/retired
- Kay Rawlins, President, Orlando City Foundation
- Lauredan Official, Jr., Parramore Kidz Zone (PKZ) Student Alumni
