City & FDOT Implement a Quiet Zone throughout SunRail Corridor

City of Orlando Partners with Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration to Implement a Quiet Zone throughout SunRail Corridor 

February 4, 2022 – ORLANDO, FL – Earlier this week, the City of Orlando partnered with the Florida Department of Transportation and the Federal Railroad Administration to implement the “Downtown Orlando Quiet Zone” with 30 new at grade crossings, starting from Wilkinson Street to Drennen Road. This completes the Quiet Zone within the City of Orlando SunRail corridor, with a total of 35 at grade crossings. 

A Quiet Zone is a crossing in which trains are not required to blow their horn during normal operation. Train engineers will still be required to sound the horn under specific conditions to ensure safety. 

As part of establishing the Quiet Zone, the City of Orlando installed supplemental safety measures at prime locations to alert residents and visitors of an approaching train, including additional flashing lights, gates and warning devices.  

“This is a process we started back in 2014 and is a great accomplishment to further enhance the quality of life in our city for our residents, businesses, and visitors. ,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “As a city, we are thankful for the many partnerships, including government entities and private sector healthcare companies, that helped bring the Quiet Zone to completion."
