City of Orlando Delivers Fresh Farmed Food with “Gleaning” Project to Help Feed Orlando Residents in Need and Reduce Food Waste

WHAT:

On Friday, April 14, as part of National Food Waste Prevention Week, the City of Orlando’s Sustainability and Resilience team and the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services will join volunteers from local non-profits, including the Society of Saint Andrews, One Heart for Women and Children and Feed the Need by 4Roots to deliver recently “gleaned” crops collected that morning from local farms to those in need.

Gleaning is the act of collecting excess fresh foods from farms, gardens, farmers markets, grocers or any other sources after the areas have been commercially harvested in the field or there was an abundance of leftover produce. The gleaning on Friday helps remove about 5,000 pounds of leftover crops, including cabbage and sweet corn, to be hauled off then delivered to One Heart for Women and Children and Feed the Need by 4Roots.

At the delivery event at 12 p.m., the first crates of crops will be handed off to One Heart for Women and Children to be distributed to struggling families, then any excess food will be delivered to 4Roots. Since 2020, the City of Orlando has harvested thousands of pounds of food as part of Orlando’s Food Rescue Program. Rather than being discarded, more than 43,500 pounds of food have been gleaned and a total of 156,500 pounds have been donated to help reduce food insecurity and hunger and improve the quality of life for those in Central Florida.
