Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Orlando City Council Will Proclaim February as Black History Month in the City of Orlando

The city celebrates the perseverance, achievements and lasting contributions of Black Americans in the Central Florida community

WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and the Orlando City Council will proclaim February as
Black History Month in the City of Orlando. The month provides the opportunity to celebrate the resilience of Black Americans throughout history and locally in Central Florida.

During Black History Month, the City of Orlando will host events for residents to participate in, including a community celebration, an art exhibition, a “Meet the Artists” reception and a community event focused on fair housing rights. The events will highlight this year’s Black History Month theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” which showcases the lasting contributions of Black Americans to the nation’s cultural landscape in visual arts, performing arts, theater, literature, film, music and much more.

The events are part of the City of Orlando’s continued efforts to play a role in helping to create a more equitable, inclusive community for all residents, along with the generous partners and sponsorships of Wells Fargo Bank, Orlando Credit Union, Orlando Magic, Bank of America and Fifth Third Bank.

The Orlando City Council will proclaim February as Black History Month in the City of Orlando. In addition, the City of Orlando’s Black History Month Planning Committee and sponsors will be recognized for helping to coordinate, promote and support a variety of events that celebrate the rich and diverse culture of Black heritage.

5 p.m. – City of Orlando’s Black History Month Art Exhibition Opening Reception
Orlando City Hall, Terrace Gallery, 1st Floor

Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill and District 6 City Commissioner Bakari F. Burns will host the opening reception of the City of Orlando's Black History Month Art Exhibition celebrating the creativity, inspiration and cultural heritage of Black visual artists. The art exhibition runs from Monday, February 5, 2024, until Sunday, March 31, 2024.

9 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. - What’s Up Downtown Parramore Historic Bus Tour

Wells’Built Museum of African American History and Culture, 511 West South Street

Hosted by District 5 City Commissioner Regina I. Hill, the city will celebrate Black History Month with a focus on Black American stories of achievement, perseverance and resilience in the Parramore neighborhood through a historic bus tour, including a stop at Tinker Field and the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center. Following the tour, guests will enjoy complimentary admission to the Wells’Built Museum of African American History and Culture.

10 a.m. – “Meet the Artists” Reception

Orlando City Hall, Terrace Gallery, 1st Floor

The City of Orlando Multicultural Affairs Office, in partnership with the Downtown Orlando Partnership and Orlando Credit Union, presents a “Meet the Artists” reception in celebration of the visual talents inspired by Black History Month. At the event, guests learn more about the inspiration, stories and cultural influences that shaped artist’s work while enjoying coffee and donuts from black-owned and operated businesses.

5 p.m. – City of Orlando’s Black History Month Community Celebration Event

Camping World Stadium, West Plaza Lounge, 1 Citrus Bowl Place

The annual Black History Month Community Celebration Event celebrates the positive influences of Black Americans in the Central Florida community. This free event will include the participation of Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer, City Commissioners, City of Orlando Poet Laureate Shawn Welcome, Standing Ovation Dancers, saxophonist James Johnson, entertainment, music, food and the debut of the City Beautiful Voices, a choir featuring city employees.

10 a.m. – City of Orlando Fair Housing Fair

Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center, 800 Grand Street

The City of Orlando’s Office of Human Relations is hosting the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development-sponsored Fair Housing Fair as an opportunity for the community to learn more about the City of Orlando’s Chapter 57 Ordinance and its discrimination protections under the Fair Housing Act. This family friendly event will feature local community organizations,free credit checks and mortgage counseling, games, music, food, and Fair Housing training sessions courtesy of Community Legal Services of Mid-Florida, Inc. and Florida Legal Services.
