Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer Works Along with Public Works Street Sweepers to Highlight Hurricane Preparedness

WHAT:
On Thursday, October 5, 2023, Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer will hit the streets, with the city’s Public Works staff, to help sweep up debris and keep it out of storm drains to prevent flooding caused by rain and storms. Street sweeping is done year-round as part of the “Keep Leaves Off the Streets” campaign, but Mayor Dyer will highlight this effort as a reminder we are still in hurricane season and the importance of continuing to prepare. During the event, Mayor Dyer will learn about the equipment used and help remove debris, fallen branches and leaves from residential streets. On average, the city’s nine street sweepers brush or vacuum up about 35,000 cubic yards of leaves annually, which is enough to fill more than 2,100 large dump trucks.

The work-along will highlight the city's readiness for hurricane season and the essential role played by public works teams in keeping Orlando's streets clean and safe before, during and after severe weather events. The city's coordinated response efforts aim to minimize disruptions caused by hurricanes and facilitate a swift return to normalcy.
