Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser Take Part in a Friendly Wager Ahead of the NWSL Championship Match

WHAT:
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer and Washington, D.C., Mayor Muriel Bowser are taking part in a friendly wager ahead of the National Women’s Soccer League Championship match between the Orlando Pride and the Washington Spirit. The clubs will meet in Kansas City on Saturday night, with the Pride seeking its first championship.

The stakes of the wager? The losing city will light up a major landmark with the winning team’s colors next week.

If the Spirit claim victory, the iconic fountain at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando will glow yellow. But if the Pride emerge as champions – marking a milestone as Orlando’s first major league champion among its professional sports teams – the Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge in Washington, D.C., will be lit purple.

“The Pride have had a record-breaking season and made history time and time again,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer. “I have full confidence that they will make even more history on Saturday night. I am happy to make this friendly wager with Mayor Bowser and look forward to seeing Orlando’s championship victory recognized in our nation’s capital.”
