Update on Additional Safety Measures in Downtown Orlando
Phase 2 of Reopening Orange Avenue Set to Begin January 17, 2025

Orlando, Florida (January 16, 2025) - The City of Orlando will begin the next phase of the reopening of Orange Avenue in Downtown Orlando on January 17, 2025, as a part of our ongoing efforts to enhance public safety and support a vibrant downtown community.

The next phase of safety measures will expand the current barricade installations along Orange Avenue that began last November, to include center-lane barricades on Central Boulevard and Pine Street. Roads will remain closed to vehicular traffic during this phase.

The initial phases of these changes have been guided by the following priorities:

  • Keeping pedestrians closer to sidewalks
  • Supporting downtown businesses by maintaining access and encouraging patronage

These efforts have been complemented by other safety initiatives that have been implemented over the last several years including:

  • Adding more code enforcement officers downtown
  • Increasing funding for Orlando Police officers
  • Expanding the SAFE program and Orlando Connect
  • Enhancing lighting throughout the downtown core
  • Securing private parking lots
  • Adjusting the noise ordinance
  • Requiring permits for alcohol sales from midnight to 2 a.m. in the Downtown Entertainment District

The city is dedicated to ensuring the safety of the community while fostering a vibrant, thriving downtown that serves as a welcoming hub for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
