City of Orlando Unveils Historic Marker at Original Jones High School and Callahan Elementary

WHAT:
On Saturday, February 15, 2025, District 5 City Commissioner Shan Rose will join the Callahan Neighborhood Association, elected officials and former students to honor the unique history of Parramore. At the event, a state historical marker will be unveiled to commemorate the original Jones High School and Callahan Elementary School at the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center.

This event will recognize the site’s historical importance as the location of the original Jones High School, which was built at the corner of North Parramore Avenue and West Washington Street and opened in the 1922-23 school year. Jones High School was the first and only high school for Black students in Orlando, playing a critical role in the education and empowerment of the Black community during segregation.

In 1952, the location was transformed into Callahan Elementary School in honor of Dr. J.B. Callahan, the area’s only Black physician. In 1970, it became the only Orange County school to be closed during the desegregation of schools. The site was later repurposed into the Dr. J.B. Callahan Neighborhood Center, growing into a cornerstone of the Parramore community that continues to serve the area today.

Following the marker unveiling, former students will gather for brunch and fellowship, while enjoying music from the Jones Alumni and Community Band.
