Last updated on March 03, 2020
March 3, 2020 – ORLANDO, FL – This past Saturday, the City of Orlando Mayor’s Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission held the 21st annual MLK Youth Humanitarian Awards at the Convention Center of Disney’s Contemporary Resort.
The Mayor’s Youth Humanitarian Award recognizes and celebrates 24 outstanding community youth who exemplify the ideals embraced by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., through their character and leadership.
“It is clear that each of these students exemplify the ideals of Dr. King that our city and our MLK Commission believe in,” said Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer.
The student winners were selected for the honor based on the content of their character and service to others in the community. This year, for the first time, Reina Fortune of Olympia High School and Brittany Hart of Ocoee High School were recognized as two-time award recipients, having been nominated for the award for a second time.
“Each of the MLK Youth Humanitarians is a peer role model and sets a standard for all people in the City of Orlando,” proclaimed Mayor Dyer. “The 2020 MLK Youth Humanitarians have exhibited an outstanding commitment to their theme of Justice, Unity, Inclusion, Courage and Equality.”
During the event, keynote speaker Vernice “FlyGirl” Armour, shared her experience as the first U.S. African American female combat pilot and how she propelled herself from beat cop to combat pilot in a record-breaking three years.
