March 10, 2020 – ORLANDO, Fla. —Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer hosted the City of Orlando’s 15th Annual Neighborhood & Community Summit on Saturday, March 7, 2020. The one-day training event brought together close to 350 residents, community leaders, city staff and elected officials looking to connect, learn and grow strong, vibrant communities and organizations.

The event also honored volunteers and organizations who excel in building better neighborhoods and strengthening the local community.  Mayor Dyer presented the Diversity and Inclusion Champion Award, the annual Neighborhood Champion Award and the Community Builder Award to the 2020 Neighborhood & Community Summit honorees.

“It is important to honor and recognize the individuals and organizations that give tirelessly their time, talent and resources to improve the quality of life for all our residents,” said Mayor Dyer. “These men and women embody what it means to be a good neighbor and make the Orlando community a better place for all of us.”

The Diversity and Inclusion Champion award was presented to the One Orlando Alliance, a coalition of over 30 organizations working to make Central Florida a model of nonprofits, businesses, philanthropic and government institutions working together to create a safe, welcoming, and inclusive community for all LGBTQ+ people.

The Neighborhood Champion award was presented to John and Carla Daly from the Vista Lakes Neighborhood. In just three years’ time, the Dalys transformed what was once a small neighborhood committee struggling for participation, into a thriving neighborhood group that oversees ten sub committees full of volunteers making a difference.

The Community Builder award was given to the Central Florida Community Arts for their commitment to providing access and inclusion to arts for all, offering a multitude of community resources varying from private lessons, to arts and wellness programs for people with varying abilities, in over 70 site-specific programs.

“Our culture of collaboration is our community’s greatest strength, and this annual event is just one example of the many resources and programs we offer to foster relationship building,” said Mayor Dyer. “I am proud of what we are all doing to make our neighborhoods and our community a better place to live, work, learn and play.”
