21st CCLC Initiative

Florida's 21st CCLC - Soaring Beyond Expectations

Last updated on April 6, 2021

The 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) initiative is a key component of the “No Child Left Behind” Act. It is an opportunity for students to enhance and reinforce academic lessons of the regular school day, while also allowing them to learn new skills and discover new opportunities after the regular school day has ended.

The focus of this program, re-authorized under Title IV, Part B, of the No Child Left Behind Act, is to provide expanded academic enrichment opportunities for children attending low performing schools. Tutorial services and academic enrichment activities are designed to help students meet local and state academic standards in subjects such as reading and math.

The City of Orlando’s Recreation division is able to offer increased educational services at no cost to elementary age students, kindergarten through 5th grade and their families at four of our program sites. The program provides all necessary supplies and teachers for academic instruction.

Academic instruction is taught through Project-Based Learning (PBL). PBL is a way of teaching that focuses on themes for an extended period of time, which helps students gain knowledge and valuable life skills. Students investigate and respond to challenging questions or problems, utilizing critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills. This way of teaching helps students make real world applications to what they are learning in the classroom.
