Fifth Place: Lessons from the Kitchen By Diane Neff
Blended harmonies of herbs and spice,
a hint of nutmeg in soft grains of rice,
and secrets whispered, kneading bread at dawn,
with solemn kitchen chats and silly songs.
The recipes of ancestors bring back
our memories of hearty meals and snacks –
the sauerbraten, spaetzle, rhubarb pie,
and Grandma keeping watch, her mindful eye
on who took seconds, who said thanks and please.
Around the table, manners were the keys
to earn the largest slice, by Grandma's rules.
She made her food with love, and served no fools!
