Peace and respect are essential in Maya’s life. Her positive attitude is focused on eliminating injustices in our society and seeking solutions rather than voicing complaints. One such example is initiating a fundraiser to provide free hygiene products to anyone who is in need at her school. She challenges and leads underserved populations to use their own voices.

In school Maya has been drum major of her school’s band for three years, co-president of the Black Student Union, member of the Hispanic/Latin Student Union, commissioner of the school’s Reformative Council and senior class vice president.

Her favorite Martin Luther King, Jr. quote is: “Make a career of humanity. Commit yourself to the noble struggle for equal rights. You will make a greater person of yourself, a greater nation of your country, and a finer world to live in.”

Future Goals: Maya desires to be a clinical psychologist studying at either University of Chicago, Southern University or New York University.
