Camryn Flakes- West Orange High School
Camryn Flakes is extraordinarily intelligent, responsible, dedicated, and a student leader amongst her peers. She takes rigorous classes at West Orange High while being dual enrolled at Valencia College. Camryn is already business and entrepreneurship certified with her own company, called “CamrynCouture.” Camryn, like Dr. King, aspires to be a voice for all people, and a voice that knows only peace can create positive change. She also credits Dr. Martin Luther King with being a leader, philanthropist, educator, pastor, activist, and a mentor to all, and someday she aspires to “hopefully be at least a shred of the person he was, as he was an extraordinary human being.” Camryn is President of the FBLA chapter at her school, a member of the International Thespian Society, a member of the drama club, and the school’s Flag Football team. Her last service event was volunteering at “The Madison at Ocoee” a nursing home for the elderly, and now, as a new member of the National Honor Society, she will have a plethora of new community service opportunities. Camryn volunteered as a Camp Counselor at Garden Theatre and loved working with the kids. Camryn has great empathy for people of color because, like them, she has been prejudged. Camryn strongly feels that “it’s incredibly sorrowful that people are still judged by their skin’s hue and that she has to work that much harder to be seen, I mean truly seen." As a final note, Camryn declares that she not only shares Dr.King’s beliefs but embodies them in everything she does.
Favorite MLK Quote: “I look to a day when people will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.”
