GENERAL

Parkland Shooting

Here in Orlando, we know the incredibly long and difficult path that lies ahead for the City of Parkland and everyone impacted by what happened there following the tragic shooting earlier this month at the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.

In the aftermath of Pulse, communities across the world shared their love and strength with us.

Mayor Buddy Dyer asked that everyone in chambers pause for a moment of silence to pay respects to Parkland and all those who are hurting right now.

ITEMS OF NOTE

Ordinances First Read # 3 – Disorderly Conduct

Council voted on an item to approve aid to our officers in responding to threats made on social media. If someone currently makes a false threat to cause harm, that is against the law under Florida Statute (790.164, Fla. Stat), they can be arrested. But if someone makes a threat on social media that shows the intent to “shoot up” a school or other venue, that is not against existing law – unless the threat is sent directly to the alleged victims or their families.

This City ordinance would close that gap and enable our officers to investigate threats and take action to ensure the safety and well-being of our residents.
