City Council Update 4.1.24

GENERAL  ITEMS

District 5 Update

As a city our focus is on ensuring the residents of District 5 are appropriately served and represented. We are working with the Supervisor of Elections and hope to be able to hold a special election on Tuesday, May 21, 2024, to temporarily fill the District 5 City Commission seat.

There are several city processes and procedures that need to be approved by the Orlando City Council to facilitate this special election and we will be holding a special City Council Meeting on Monday, April 8, 2024, to move those forward to allow for qualifying to begin for candidates as quickly as possible.

Spring Holidays – Easter, Ramadan, Passovover

Residents in our community have been, or will be, recognizing holidays during this time of the year, including Ramadan, Easter and Passover. We want to wish everyone observing a peaceful and joyous time.

Spring Fiesta in the Park

We’re also celebrating spring this weekend with our Spring Fiesta in the Park celebration returning to Lake Eola Park. The free, family-friendly event is a great opportunity to experience the works of hundreds of artists and crafters, enjoy our wonderful weather and discover some of the unique offerings of our downtown.

407 Day

This Sunday, April 7, we will also celebrate 407 Day – a day that encourages residents to support their favorite local businesses and fosters hometown pride. On 407 Day, each social post shared, each meal enjoyed and each experience cherished is an opportunity to celebrate our city and contribute to the growth of our local economy.

ITEMS OF NOTE:

D#3 – US Forest Service Urban and Community Forestry Grant

Our Families, Parks, and Recreation Department is receiving a one-million-dollar grant from the U.S. Forest Service to enhance our city’s tree canopy and will also cover the costs of tree maintenance and pruning in underserved neighborhoods ahead of storm season in the public right of way. Also, unique to this grant, is that it will fund a training program in partnership with our Youth Employment Program to build the next generation of careers in urban forestry.
