CITY COUNCIL WORKSHOP

GENERAL ITEMS

Commissioner Burns Birthday

As its tradition to recognize the birthdays of our commission, please join us in wishing Commissioner Bakari Burns a Happy Birthday who is celebrating this Thursday.

Bob Snow Condolences

On behalf of the entire City Council, we send our condolences to Bob Snow’s loved ones. Bob passed away late last week, but will always be remembered in our community. His vision and entrepreneurial spirit helped put Orlando on the map as a tourist destination. There’s no doubt that Bob’s love for our city and our downtown was incredibly impactful over the years.

ITEMS OF NOTE

D 2-6 FPR Grants

We have several grant items on the agenda that allow us to support partners who work to equip young residents in our Orlando Kidz Zones with the tools they need to become successful adults. Together we are providing opportunities to help young residents in Parramore, Holden Heights, Engelwood and Mercy Drive thrive. Would the representatives from:

  • Community Coordinated Care for Children

  • New Image Youth Center

  • Early Learning Coalition and

  • Page 15

please stand so we can recognize and thank you for your partnership.

13-2 Ordinance No. 2025-4 Amending and Restating the Land Development Regulations of the Coalition for the Homeless

On today’s agenda are a number of items to support the Coalition for the Homeless and plans to modernize its campus to better serve our community’s women and children struggling with homelessness. This includes replacing the existing 70-year-old Women & Families building with a new six-story facility to provide shelter for up to 350 women and children.

This is an increase from the 240 individuals they can serve in the facility today.

And this is important because the Coalition, like other shelters in our community, is consistently at capacity resulting in women and children occasionally being turned away.

Enhanced services such as counseling, medical assistance, dental services and childcare will be provided on-site so that guests can access a majority of the services they need without having to leave campus.

Commissioners, as you know, we have publicly expressed support for using some of our Accelerate Orlando funds toward the Coalition’s modernization. The Coalition is working with staff on that process now with additional City Council action expected in the future.
