AWARDS AND RECOGNITION

Roy Payne’s Retirement Proclamation

Today is the final City Council meeting for Chief Assistant City Attorney Roy Payne. Roy has served the City of Orlando for more than three decades and his professionalism and expertise has been incredibly impactful. We'd like for Deputy City Attorney Jody Litchford to share a few words on Roy’s impact before we read a proclamation in his honor.

GENERAL ITEMS

Pulse Remembrance Events

This is a difficult week for so many in Orlando and beyond as Wednesday marks eight years since the Pulse tragedy.

There are a pair of remembrance events on Wednesday that help us all honor the 49 lives taken… and invite the community to join us.

The Remembrance Ceremony will be held at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts at 7 p.m. The event is free, but tickets must be reserved in advance. The ceremony will be preceded by the ringing of the 49 bells at First United Methodist Church.

We are proud that the community continues to offer love and hope to the survivors, families of the victims, first responders and all those impacted by the tragedy.

As we look ahead to the future, one of the ways that we can honor the 49 each and every day is by creating a permanent memorial. To help guide that process, a Pulse Memorial Advisory Committee will be formed to help develop opportunities for input and engagement, in English and Spanish, and ultimately recommend a conceptual design. Those interested can apply at visit pulseorlando.org/committee.

It is our hope that together we can create a place of reflection where those impacted by the tragedy and our entire community can go to remember.

District 5 Interim City Commission Election

The Run-Off Election for the District 5 Interim City Commission seat is scheduled for Tuesday, June 18. Early voting started this morning. Residents are encouraged to visit orlando.gov/election to learn about ways to vote.

Juneteenth

Next Wednesday, our community will celebrate Juneteenth, which marks the end of slavery in the United States on June 19, 1865. Commemorating Juneteenth gives the opportunity to celebrate civil rights progress, while also recognizing the injustices that Black Americans have endured.

We are proud to share that Juneteenth is a recognized holiday for City of Orlando employees. We also want to invite the community to our Juneteenth Celebration, which we’re hosting along with Senator Geraldine Thompson. The free event will be held at Camping World Stadium this Saturday from 2 to 7 p.m.
