City Council Update 5.13.24

WORKSHOP

Commissioners, the City of Orlando is working on a lot of important issues, and today there are two workshops on some of those.

First up, an update on the most recent legislative session in here in the State of Florida. Following that, an update on Building Energy and Water Efficiency from the Office of Sustainability and Resilience.

#1 – Legislative Update

Let's begin with the Legislative Update, which will provide insight into some of the key bills from this recent state legislative session impacting the City of Orlando.

To give a brief overview, calling on the Director of Intergovernmental Relations, Kyle Shephard, who will continue the session overview and identify some of the key bills that passed through the legislature.

#2 – Building Energy and Water Efficiency

Next, an update on the BEWES policy. This is the Building Energy and Water Efficiency Strategy, which was adopted by City Council in 2016. It requires buildings 50-thousand square foot and larger to benchmark energy consumption in order to help achieve citywide clean energy goals.

To give a brief overview, let's call on the Director of Sustainability, Resilience and Future-Ready, Mike Hess, and his team, to give an update on how this policy has worked over the last several years.

Invocation & Pledge

Call on Commissioner Gray to lead the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.

GENERAL ITEMS

National Police Week

This week is National Police Week, when the country honors the law enforcement officers who gave their lives in the line of duty. Over the last few years, two Orlando Police Department officers – Lieutenant Debra Clayton and Officer Kevin Valencia – were taken while heroically serving. Their bravery and dedication to protecting our community will never be forgotten. We send love to their families and their OPD colleagues.

OFD Birthday and Station 11

May is a big month for the Orlando Fire Department. Last week, the department celebrated its 139th birthday. Much has changed since OFD started back in 1885 with a lone fire apparatus. The change will be seen later this week Commissioner Ortiz, when we cut the ribbon to celebrate the new, state of the art Fire Station 11 on Curry Ford Road.

In the near future, there will be a new Fire Station 6 near the Orlando Executive Airport. On today’s agenda is an agreement with H.J. High for design of that station.

D5 Interim City Commissioner Election

To remind District 5 residents that the Special Election for the District 5 Interim City Commission seat has been scheduled for Tuesday, May 21. Early voting started this morning. Residents are encouraged to visit orlando.gov/election to learn about ways to cast their ballot.

Memorial Day Commemoration Ceremony

The community is invited to join Commissioner Sheehan and our Veterans Advisory Council on Friday, May 24 at 6 p.m. for a Memorial Day ceremony at Greenwood Cemetery. The event gives our city the opportunity to honor the military service members who made the ultimate sacrifice while protecting Americans and our allies around the globe.

ITEMS OF NOTE

Moving on to items of note...

C11 and CRA4 - Travel and Leisure, Co.

On today’s agenda, we look to approve agreements to support Travel and Leisure moving its global headquarters to downtown Orlando. The city wants downtown to be a magnet for professionals and innovation... and a focal point in the efforts to diversify and strengthen the local economy.

Travel and Leisure is one of Central Florida’s largest publicly-traded companies, with a focus on the vacation industry.

They’ll bring more than 900 jobs downtown, with a plan to add more than 100 high-wage positions over the next five years.

Kim Marshall, Chief Human Resources Officer, is here today and we'd like to recognize her.
