Community Action Plan
City Council received an update on Green Works Orlando and the 2018 Community Sustainability Action Plan.
Created with input from our residents, the updated plan introduces new strategies and best practices to help us continue to transform Orlando into one of the most environmentally-friendly, economically and socially vibrant communities in the nation.

Hurricane Florence
Mayor Buddy Dyer requested everyone in Council Chambers take a moment to keep the residents in the impacted areas of Hurricane Florence in thoughts and prayers as they work to recover.
Anyone who wants to help is encouraged to make a monetary donation to national nonprofits, including the National American Red Cross, Harvest Hope Food Bank and The Salvation Army.
A number of Orlando’s own public safety personnel with the city are also on standby ready to help, if deployed.
Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff
Last week, Mayor Dyer joined Commissioner Ortiz, Commissioner Stuart and the community to kick off the Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff.
The event featured Latin food, music and an art exhibit of local Central Florida’s artists. The highlight of the night was the recognition we gave to the Grammy award-winning singer Olga Tañon, for her successful artistic career and support to our local Hispanic community.
Thanks to the steering committee comprised of the City employees, Luis, Giorgina, Ana, Marily, Laudi and Adolfina, for their great job coordinating this successful event.
Community Action Plan Resolution
Council voted on a resolution to accept the 2018 Green Works Sustainability Community Action Plan. As we continue to work to transform Orlando into one of the most environmentally-friendly, economically and socially vibrant communities in the nation, this plan will introduce potential new strategies and best practices.
What’s wonderful about the plan is that it was created by our residents and featured community engagement workshops and surveys that allowed residents to give recommendations on the types of policies and programs that they would like to see in Orlando. Mayor Dyer thanked all of the residents who were part of this process, as well as the plan’s task force and our Green Works Orlando staff for working together to create this new strategic roadmap for sustainability in Orlando.
Sports Best Nation
The City of Orlando recently made some announcements that continue to solidify Orlando as the leading sports destination in the country. Orlando will host the Major League Soccer Game next summer at the Orlando City Stadium, meaning that our city will host two pro all-star games in 2019, which includes the NFL Pro Bowl returning to Camping World Stadium in January.
Camping World Stadium will also host another big event in May when the Monster Jam World Finals comes to Orlando after 19 years in Las Vegas. The championship weekend is expected to bring as many as 100,000 fans to our region.
Main Streets Awards
On September 27, our city is celebrating the 10 year anniversary of Orlando Main Streets with a Main Streets Awards Ceremony. Mayor Dyer said he is proud of all this program has done for our city in the past decade. Orlando’s nine neighborhood commercial districts scattered throughout our city drive our region’s economy by providing jobs, goods and services for our residents.
In the 10 years our city has had the Orlando Main Streets, small business successes within these districts include more than $1.14 billion in private and public investments, more than 1,000 net new business openings and the creation of more than 6,000 net full and part-time jobs.
ITEMS OF NOTE
Bicycle Items – B # 3 (Bicycle Plan Update), B # 4 (Downtown Connector Trail) and Ordinance 1st Read # 3 (Dockless Bike Share Items)
Council voted on several items that will further our efforts to ensure we provide transportation opportunities for everyone and expand these alternatives for our residents and visitors to connect to jobs, opportunity and recreation.
Expanding our bicycling infrastructure and increasing safety is a key component of this. Some recent accomplishments we’ve made include –
- Expansions made to our trail network
- The creation of new bike lanes
- Opening our first mountain bike park
- And utilizing innovative installments like our green bike lanes
In order to continue our success in building a safer and more convenient transportation network, this year we will be embarking on a comprehensive update to our Bicycle Plan, furthering the design and construction of segments of our Bicycle Beltway and creating new options through the passage of an ordinance to allow for Dockless Bike Sharing.
These efforts, combined with our recent accomplishments and other ongoing projects, continue to further our goal to be not only the City Beautiful – but the City Bike-able!

Hearings # 1 – Public Hearing with Respect to Preliminary Budget of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority for Fiscal Year 2018-2019:
Mayor Dyer opened a public hearing with respect to the preliminary budget of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority for the fiscal year 2018-2019. He recognized the following GOAA representatives present: Frank Kruppenbacher, Phil Brown and Kathleen Sharman.
On August 15, 2018, the GOAA Board adopted a resolution approving its preliminary budget for the Fiscal Year 2018-2019 commencing October 1, 2018 and ending September 30, 2019.
The preliminary budget for Orlando International Airport is $566,910,000 and the preliminary budget for the Orlando Executive Airport is $3,791,180.
In accordance with Section 12 of the City Charter, GOAA has submitted the preliminary budget to City Council for review during a public hearing. This hearing was informational and City Council did not take action.
