Council Chambers

This was the first official Council meeting back in our Council Chambers. Mayor Buddy Dyer thanked all of his staff who made the renovations possible.

We upgraded the chambers as part of our energy efficiency improvements as well as improved acoustics and lighting and updated broadcasting equipment to make it easier to watch meetings online and from home.

Venues

We had a busy weekend downtown this past weekend, especially at Camping World Stadium. More than 100,000 visited the stadium for the Beyonce/JayZ concert, as well as the Alabama/Louisville Camping World Kickoff game. Mayor Dyer thanked our venues staff for all of their hard work in making these two events a success and for managing the turnover of the field in a few short days.

Hispanic Heritage Month Kick-Off 

Please join Mayor Dyer, Commissioner Ortiz and our multicultural community at the annual Hispanic Heritage Month Kickoff on Wednesday, September 12 at 5:30 p.m. at Leu Gardens to celebrate the Hispanic culture and heritage. This free event celebrates the commencement of Hispanic Heritage month, which runs from September 15 to October 15 and recognizes the culture and traditions of U.S. residents who trace their roots to Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South America and the Caribbean. ITEMS OF NOTE

C # 6-9 – Small Business Façade and Business Assistance Program Agreement 

In the City of Orlando, we are always excited for opportunities to assist, support, and celebrate our small businesses, as we know they are truly the backbone of our community. City Council awarded three of our local businesses with assistance through our Small Business Facade, Site Improvement and Adaptive Reuse Program: Ivanhoe Park Brewing Company and Sportstown Billiards.

D # 1 – Park Improvements at Lake Lorna Doone 

Council voted on an item that will further our commitment to investing in our neighborhoods to ensure access to amenities and enhanced infrastructure for our residents.

One of our unique neighborhoods our residents are proud to call home is West Lakes and today through a partnership with Florida Citrus Sports, we will vote on an agreement to move forward more than eight million in improvements to the neighborhood’s Lake Lorna Doone Park.

Located near Camping World Stadium, the project will transform the 12-acre park into a place where, friends, neighbors and visitors can gather to connect, play and exercise. Some of the improvements planned for the park include a new walking loop with fitness stations, a new inclusive playground, two new basketball courts and a water spray park. Other improvements include new restroom facilities, benches, drinking fountains, lake overlooks, a fountain in the lake and a community garden.

Mayor Dyr thanked Commissioner Hill for her contributions on this project as well as our community partner, Florida Citrus Sports for connecting with residents to identify the improvements they most want to see as we renovate and enhance Lake Lorna Doone Park.
