City Council Update 9.9.24
CITY COUNCIL WORKSHOP
4Roots Farm Update
As you know, in 2021, the City and the 4Roots Farms entered into a long-term lease for 18 acres of property in the Packing District for the 4Roots Farm Campus.
The vision for the campus is to gather and collaborate on solutions to address food insecurity by educating our community on how to grow food and encouraging sustainable food systems.
The campus plans to offer unique hands-on learning experiences that highlight innovative practices from around the world.
Now, three years later, we would like to invite Founder and CEO John Rivers to provide us with an update on the 4Roots Farm and its progress.
Invocation & Pledge
Call on Commissioner Burns to lead the Invocation and Pledge of Allegiance.
AWARDS AND PRESENTATIONS
Hispanic Heritage Month Proclamation
Each year, we come together as a community to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, honoring the rich heritage, culture and contributions of Hispanic Americans to our nation, state and city.
We want to thank the staff of our Hispanic Heritage Month Planning Committee and Sponsors who have organized upcoming events for our community to enjoy. We also want to recognize Commissioner Ortiz for his leadership and contributions.
Luis Martinez, our Office of Multicultural Affairs Manager, is here to give us an overview of our Hispanic Heritage Month recognition.
Olympian Omari Jones
Over the summer, our country and the world were once again captivated by the Olympic Games.
Watching the best athletes on earth compete in Paris was incredibly inspiring. It was even more special for our community because we had a hometown hero who not only participated in the games… he won a medal.
Today we are honoring Omari Jones, a Valencia College student and Edgewater High School graduate. Omari, please join me as we read a City of Orlando proclamation.
Omari... before we take a photo with the entire City Council, we do have one more thing to present. Over the years we have presented a few keys to the city, but we thought that something else might be fitting for you.
So we are proud to present with you the first – and only – glove to the city. Congratulations!

September 11 Events OFD/OPD
This year both of our public safety departments, Orlando Fire and Orlando Police will be hosting Remembrance ceremonies to honor the nearly 3,000 of our fellow Americans and first responders who lost their lives on September 11th, 2001.
In the morning of September 11th, Orlando Police officers will hold their ceremony at 10 a.m. in their community room. Later on that evening, tradition continues with a candlelight ceremony hosted at Fire Station One at 6 p.m. with Orlando Firefighters and EMS officials.
POW/MIA Ceremony
We would also like to invite the community, and especially those who have served in our armed forces, to attend our Veterans Advisory Council’s POW-MIA Recognition Ceremony on Friday, September 13 at 10:30 a.m. in the City Hall Rotunda here at City Hall. The annual event honors our country’s military prisoners of war and their families.
