General Items
The Mennello Museum of American Art continues to enrich our Central Florida community through art, exhibitions, education and events.
At the museum’s White Canvas Party this past Friday evening, we had the pleasure of participating in the public unveiling of the project design for an expansion that will merge art, architecture, nature and people.
We are excited to see what the future holds for the museum and confident this remarkable vision will benefit Orlando for decades to come.
One of the highest priorities of our shared vision for downtown Orlando is the desire to have more cultural and arts amenities within our urban core. On October 18 and 19, IMMERSE – presented by the Creative City Project – will bring more than 1,000 artists and performers to downtown Orlando for large scale, interactive installations. We hope you will all join us in attending IMMERSE next week.
We also invite you all to join Mayor Dyer, Commissioner Sheehan, city commissioners, OPD and OFD at the Come Out With Pride Parade this Saturday, October 12 at 4 p.m. at Lake Eola Park. Our city family will walk in the parade together sharing our message of diversity, inclusion and equality as we support Orlando's LGBTQ Plus community.
A & Other – City Operations/Union Contracts – Living Wage
We're proud today that two of our union contracts coming forward include wage increases that will ensure all our City employees are paid a $15/hour wage over the next three years.
As you know, bringing people’s wages up is an important component of enhancing their quality of life and connecting our community to more housing and transportation options.
We would like to thank our Union representatives here today, from LIUNA and SEIU. Thank you for working together with us.
B#4 – The Plaza Live – Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra
On today’s agenda are several items that support our Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra’s plans to expand their operations and offerings at The Plaza Live Theatre and further expand arts and culture in our community.
Renovating this iconic community venue will also help ensure that the legacy of arts and entertainment that has occurred there since 1963 continues there.
Partnerships like this continue to take the arts and culture in Orlando to the next level and benefit the entire Central Florida region. We would like for members from the Orlando Philharmonic Orchestra who are here in attendance today to please stand so we can recognize you. Thank you for continued commitment to furthering the arts in our community.
B#12- Lease Agreement for Walker Henry House
Another item on today’s agenda is a lease agreement with the One Pulse Foundation to utilize the historic Walker-Hendry House in downtown Orlando as a temporary office. As the One Pulse Foundation continues their plans for a permanent memorial we are proud to be able to offer our continued support in their efforts to honor the 49 lives taken during the Pulse tragedy and to create a space for our community to reflect and learn.
Members of the One Pulse Foundation’s board and task force are here today and we would like for them to stand to be recognized.
On today’s agenda there are a number of items we consider annually to support our economic development partners to provide technical assistance, educational programming and other support to businesses looking to start, stay and grow in Orlando.
Also on today’s agenda are the renewal agreements for the city’s ten Main Streets, including an item that will allow the Church Street District to expand into Parramore. We know Commissioner Hill will talk about that more during her remarks but we would like to acknowledge her for her leadership.
The city’s investment in these districts has resulted in thriving neighborhoods with new businesses – in fact more than 1,000 small businesses have opened since we started the Main Street Program. Thank you to our Main Street directors, board members and volunteers for all you do for our city.
EA Items (EDV 26, CRA 2, Hearings #1)
On today’s agenda are three items that will allow the city to support the relocation of the state headquarters for Electronic Arts to Downtown Orlando’s Creative Village.
We’re going to move the items so they can be voted on together and we’ll hear a presentation from Brooke.
