Council Update – April 25, 2022

WORKSHOP

Families, Parks, & Recreation Youth Programming

As we all know, the city has invested many resources into new programs that help residents through our Families, Parks and Recreation Department. We should all be proud that FPR programs are playing a key role in our efforts to create a more equitable city for all.

Today we will hear from FPR Director Lisa Early, who will share details on the impact of our programs on young residents. She will also provide an update on recently launched projects, like the Community Violence Intervention Initiative.

MAYOR’S UPDATE

General Items

OFD Condolences

We want to offer our condolences to the family, friends and Orlando Fire Department colleagues of Lieutenant Anthony Felix, who recently passed away. Lieutenant Felix served our community since 2003 and was known for his kindness and compassion. He will be missed.

Grand Avenue Grand Opening

Looking ahead to Wednesday, we are looking forward to celebrating the grand opening of the Grand Avenue Neighborhood Center. The redevelopment of the historic Grand Avenue Elementary School features a gymnasium, the new location for the Orlando Pottery Studio and expansion of youth programs.

The ribbon cutting is on Wednesday, but we want to encourage residents to explore the new center on Saturday, April 30 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Community Open House where there will be facility tours, youth activities, raffles and more.

Thomas Chatmon Downtowner of the Year

Speaking of celebration, the Downtown Orlando Partnership is hosting its 33rd annual Golden Brick Awards on Tuesday, May 3 at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

The Golden Brick Awards celebrate the people, projects, and initiatives that propel downtown forward.

During this event, we will have the honor of presenting Thomas Chatmon - our Executive Director of the City of Orlando’s Downtown Development Board and Community Redevelopment Agency – with the Downtowner of the Year award.

Thomas, thank you for your commitment to our community. We look forward to celebrating next week.

2022 Florida Police Chiefs Association Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year Award

And speaking of employees being recognized for their outstanding work and dedication to our community, our Orlando Police Chief Orlando Rolon, has been named Outstanding Chief Executive of the Year by the Florida Police Chiefs Association.

This award recognized individuals for exceptional performance and support and advancement of the law enforcement profession.

Congratulations Chief of this much deserved recognition.

Items of Note

A#5 – Come Out with Pride 2026 Bid Funding Agreement

Moving on to items of note, in 2026, we will recognize the 10-year mark of the Pulse tragedy as we continue to honor the 49 victims, their families, the survivors and the first responders.

As a community we do not want to be only remembered by our most painful moments, but also by the unity and countless of acts of love and kindness. That is one of the reasons why Come Out With Pride is working to bring World Pride to our city in 2026.

World Pride is an opportunity to showcase our city’s commitment to inclusion and equity on a global stage. This event will bring more visitors from around the globe to our region and will create a multi-million dollar economic impact. On today’s agenda is a funding agreement with Come Out With Pride, that will help the organization develop its World Pride bid.
