Council Update - April 26, 2021

General Items

MANicure Movement – National Child Abuse Prevention Month

We wanted to call attention to why my finger nails are blue as we joined Embrace Families in the MANicure Movement to raise awareness during National Child Abuse Prevention Month.

Volunteer Appreciation Month

Also, April is national Volunteer Appreciation Month and throughout this pandemic, so many residents have volunteered their time and talents to help others, including our neighbors in need. This includes our many City of Orlando volunteers. On behalf of our City Council, we want to thank our city’s volunteers, whose kindness and compassion helps improve the lives of so many in our community.

COVID-19 Update

Speaking of helping and protecting others, with more and more residents having access to the vaccine in recent weeks, there is certainly a renewed sense of hope in our community. If you haven’t gotten the vaccine yet, we encourage you to get it as soon as possible so you can protect yourself and others, and keep our economy moving forward.

And if you’ve gotten your vaccine, please become an advocate with family and friends and encourage others to get it as well. Hearing why you received it and that it was safe and effective can make all the difference for others.

Items of Note

B#7 - Rental Assistance Program

Speaking of COVID-19, today, we are considering an agreement with KPMG to help the city administer the rental assistance program to help city households get current on unpaid rent.

The program is federally funded, and to be eligible, a household must have experienced financial hardship due to COVID-19 and have a household income at or below 80% of the area median income - which for a family of four is $61,050.

Once we get our partnership in place with KPMG, we anticipate being able to open the online application portal sometime in mid-May to get this assistance out to our residents who are in-need.

Residents who are interested in applying can visit orlando.gov/assistance and sign up to receive updates on this program and when the application portal opens.
