Council Update - October 25, 2021

General Items

City of Orlando Elections

We wanted to remind everyone that the General Election will be held on Tuesday, November 2, 2021 for City Commissioner Districts 1, 3 and 5.

Early voting started today and we want to encourage residents in those districts to go out and vote.

OUC COVID-19 Thank You

In September, we joined OUC to announce that like many communities across the nation, we were experiencing a shortage in our supply of liquid oxygen as a result of the surge of the COVID-19 pandemic. Liquid oxygen is used to treat our water and OUC has our community to limit watering lawns and pressure cleaning.

Two weeks ago, thanks to those residents and businesses who conserved their water, we announced that we were able to go back to water usage as normal.

And it’s because of each resident and business who took this call to action seriously and made another change in their daily life during this pandemic. We want to thank each and every one of you who made these changes in your water use.

We also want to thank those residents that have gotten vaccinated since this call to action.  A key way to reduce the use of liquid oxygen is to reduce the number of critically ill patients in our hospitals. Your efforts in getting vaccinated continues to help our community as we move forward.

Items of Note

B#8 CDBG-CV Grant Application Entitlement Jurisdictions

Speaking of COVID-19 impacts, we have an item today that if approved will allow us to apply for Community Development Block Grant that will help us provide funding to support our residents, businesses and programs that have been impacted by the virus. If awarded, the funding would be able to support the following efforts:

  • Assisting small and disadvantaged businesses

  • Expanding broadband/internet access

  • Helping students and families in need; and

  • Improving public safety and safety of public facilities

D#1 Child And Adult Care Food Program Emergency Operational Costs Reimbursement Program

Also, on this agenda, the city is looking to approve and accept COVID-19 relief funds to support the after school meals program that Families, Parks and Recreation staff operates at all City neighborhood centers. Thank you to the Department of Health for allocating these funds to support young residents.
