Apply to Become an Orlando Police Airport Operations Officer

Step 1.Check Your Eligibility

Do you have what it takes to be an AOO at the Orlando International Airport? Here are the basic requirements:

• You must have an active Florida Law Enforcement Certification or be currently enrolled in a certified Florida Law Enforcement Academy or be a certified Law Enforcement Officer in another State, Federal agency or certain military units that qualify for Florida Equivalency of Training Certification.
• Must be a U.S. citizen.
• Must be at least 21 years old.
• Must have a high-school diploma or G.E.D. certificate.
• Must have a valid driver’s license for at least a year and a good driving record.
• Must meet standard physical conditions.
• Vision: one eye may be 20/100 corrected to 20/20; the other eye no more than 20/70 corrected to 20/20.
• Have good moral character, no felony convictions or misdemeanors involving moral character, false statements or domestic violence.
• Must be able to meet the restrictive drug standard. No pending criminal charges.
• Must pass a written exam, physical agility test, panel interview, multiple polygraph exams, background investigation, medical screening and a psychological exam.

Step 3.Check your email

It is important that you promptly check the email provided in your application, as we will be communicating important information about the process, appointment dates and times and the process in general. Due to the competitive nature of the position, we will not be following up with applicants that fail to respond to emails, phone calls or any other diligence.

Step 4.Take your Civil Service and Physical Assessment tests

If your full application is approved, we will contact you to schedule a Civil Service Exam and Physical Assessment Test.

• The Civil Service Exam consists of law enforcement scenarios and a report writing section. The exam should take approximately 2.5 hours, however, plan to stay the whole day.
• The Physical Assessment Test, which will be administered the day after the Civil Service Exam, requires candidates to:

1. Exit a patrol vehicle and removing items from the glove box and trunk, to assess coordination and dexterity.
2. Run a 220 yard run for endurance and cardiovascular condition.
3. Run a 110' obstacle course consisting of a 40-inch wall, three hurdles, a serpentine section and a 27-inch low crawl to measure coordination and agility.
4. Drag a human-form dummy, weighing 150 pounds, a distance of 100 feet for strength.
5. Assume proper firing position and dry fire a standard service handgun six times in both the dominant and non-dominant hand. 
6. The test concludes when the officer re-enters the vehicle.

Step 5.Attend an interview with the recruiting staff

If you pass the Civil Service Exam and Physical Assessment Test, we will contact you to schedule an interview with the recruiting staff. 

Step 6.Take a polygraph test

We will conduct a background investigation and contact you to schedule the first of two polygraph tests.

Step 7.Complete the final requirements

Once you get the conditional offer, you will complete a:

• Medical examination
• Psychological assessment
• Second polygraph test

If you pass these remaining steps, you will:

• Attend a 8-week orientation program.
  • When selected for the program, AOOs will sign a temporary civilian contract for the period of the 8-week orientation at a rate of $23.78/hour (40 hour work week). 
  • After the successful conclusion of the orientation and swearing in, the AOO will revert to a 36-hour a week schedule and will receive their hourly rate based on the yearly salary.
• Attend a 10-14 week (four phases) field training program at the Orlando International Airport.
